Bruce Peele was born in Hamlet NC, which is a small town close to the SC border. As a young man he started working with metal and some roofing. During WWII he worked as a sheet metal mechanic in Martin Aircraft Factory in Baltimore, MD where he met a young pop rivet lady Mabel King. After the war they married and moved back to NC. Bruce and his three brothers; Henry, BJ and Curtis all became members of the sheet metal union. He eventually moved to Fayetteville NC where he started his own business in 1960 named P & W Metalworks. He did custom sheet metal work and roofing. He also trained his wife's brother Bob King who lived in WV which would retire from the sheet metal union.
Bruce and Mabel had three kids, two boys and one girl. Both boys grew up working with their father in sheet metal and roofing. David Peele became the youngest journeyman in the sheet metal union at 18 years of age in 1965. The younger brother, Larry Peele, would also become a member of the sheet metal union but eventually moved on to other career paths. David also was hired by Alabama Roofing Company in 1965 where he stayed until 1972. With a family of his own now, two boys and one girl, David and his wife Rose moved to Raleigh in 1975. He continued to work in roofing and started his own business in 1982 Barrier Roofing Inc.. Both his sons Brian and Keith would start working at Barrier Roofing part time as kids, they both would eventually work full time in the business with their father. Due to unforeseen circumstances Barrier Roofing closed the doors in 1992. Brian and Keith continued working in the roofing industry throughout the 1990s, Brian would eventually leave roofing to pursue his passion and become a charter boat captain on the NC coast.
Keith rejoined his father in 2000 working as roof consultants. David and Keith would design roofs for Duke Energy and other clients. They would also do roof failure investigations for insurance companies. In 2010 Keith left the consulting side of the roofing industry and went back to contracting.
July of 2017 Keith decided to start his own business and he called his father to ask if he could bring back the name Barrier Roofing in honor of David and all Keith learned to be able to have the career he has enjoyed. Keith's son Luke is part of the new Barrier Roofing making it four generations of Peeles in the roofing industry. Keith to this day will call his father for advice who is still working in the industry designing roofs. Between David and Keith there is over 80 years of experience in the roofing industry, if you count the other employees at Barrier Roofing there is well over a hundred years of experience. Nothing can replace good old fashion experience.
